Change in the weather entails a change in our routine and you may find yourself losing your balance trying to adapt to this new season. It sounds simple enough yet do you actually drink enough water during the day? Staying hydrated is important all year round as our bodies are about two-thirds water. However, drinking enough water is essential during the hot months. Your body naturally loses much more water in the summer than winter.
It is recommended to drink about 2 litres a day to keep your body fit and balanced. If you are working out or spending more time in the sun, always up your water intake. Keeping your body hydrated will prevent it from overheating or collapsing during times of heatwaves. If you are struggling to make it a consistent habit, transform your simple glass of water into a wellness ritual by adding lemon, mint leaves or infuse it with fruit and keep sipping this delicious drink throughout the day.
As warm and long evenings are usually spent socialising and enjoying outdoors during the summer months, try switch your workout routine up for the season. Aim for four short but sweet morning workouts during the week. Start your day by going for a quick run when the sun isn’t too hot yet. Try strength training a couple of times a week followed by a session of restorative yoga to cool down. I found that morning workouts are more enjoyable during summer, so let’s make the most of it!
Summer is also the best time to incorporate swimming into your routine if you haven’t already! Your body will thank you for the long list of benefits swimming has to offer.
If you are wondering what to wear, choose moisture-wicking yoga leggings that are always flattering and pair them with a supportive yoga bra and a light t-shirt. You can swap your leggings for yoga shorts anytime!
The summer season is the perfect time to boost your diet with seasonal fruits and veggies. While you should be eating your fruits and veggies all year long, it is more appealing to add them to your plate when they are freshly picked. Make sure to eat all colours of the rainbow (not only the greens) – eat one fruit of every colour regularly and make half of your plate at lunch or dinner with veggies.
Glowing and healthy skin is a big factor in feeling great all year round. While you’ve had to fight off the dry weather and freezing winds during colder months, you now need to protect your skin against harsh UV rays while still getting to enjoy your time in the sun.
When you are going for your jog, popping out to a workout at the gym or yoga class, apply sunscreen to your face and any exposed skin even if the sun is not there. You can also eat natural ‘sunscreen’ foods such as veggies and foods rich in omega 3s. These anti-inflammatory foods can help your body naturally fight off UV rays.
