If you have decided to join Pilates classes but do not quite sure what to wear, we’ve made a list of dos and don’ts regarding wardrobe to get you started on the right foot.

Practicing Pilates on a regular basis has benefits not only to your body but also to your mind. Loved by women and men at any age, it helps improve strength, balance, and flexibility. Through controlled and progressive movements, you can shape and strengthen your body. In order to sustain the challenging postures, you need to focus your mind and breathing which has immense benefits to your mind. 

If you have decided to join Pilates classes but do not quite sure what to wear, we’ve made a list of do's and don’ts regarding wardrobe to get you started on the right foot.

 

Snug-fitting pieces 

When picking your Pilates outfit, keep in mind comfort and form. You need clothes that are form-fitting so that the instructor can monitor your body alignment, muscle movement, and symmetry. Wearing loose clothing is not the right choice for Pilates, because it will prevent your teacher from tracking your progress and the items could easily ride up or fall during dynamic moves, making you uncomfortable or exposing more than you want to. 

Bottoms should fit well and preferably be skin-tight such as yoga pants, track pants, and leggings. Choose slim-fitting pilates tops, tank tops or tight t-shirts.

Stretchy and breathable fabric

Another important factor to keep in mind is material. When picking out your Pilates clothing, make sure the pieces you select are made of stretchy material that allows you to move easily and freely. Check that the fabric is breathable and soft against your skin to keep you comfortable and dry throughout your session.

What to avoid

To get the most out of your Pilates class and navigate postures safely, consider the following don'ts:

  • Clothing items like tie-back-tops, hoodies, or tops/bottoms with drawstrings will be uncomfortable when doing mat Pilates. 
  • Items with belts, buttons, and zippers can be harmful to you and to the equipment you are using.
  • Jewellery of any kind can be distracting and might get caught up in the equipment causing you harm.
