While we do like settling back into our comfortable routines, returning from holidays can be quite disheartening. Whether it means the kids going back to school or your getting back to work, resuming the reality we left behind while enjoying a blissful summer vacation in an exotic destination is daunting.
But that is a completely normal feeling and it is known as the post-holiday blues. They are actually feelings of loss. After experiencing periods of consecutive activities including socialising, preparing for travel, hosting dinners and meeting with family, it is not easy to let the good times go to re-embrace reality. Even if that reality is not bad, it is just not the same as being absolutely carefree and basking in the warm European sun.
If you’ve got a case of the holiday blues, here are some tips to make it pass.
The first step in fighting the holiday blues is acknowledging they exist. Know that this feeling of loss is actually more of an adjustment to less stimulation and activity in your daily life. Rest assured that the blues will dissolve in a couple of days once you get back into your routine.
Whether for a stroll around the block or a dinner at your favourite restaurant, going out of the house is essential to avoid feeling trapped. Even if the sky is grey and hiding sun rays, go outside and breathe in the fresh air. It will immediately improve your mood and get you out of the blues loop.
Exercising releases feel-good hormones that instantly make you feel better and put you in a more cheerful mood. Choose the kind of exercise you prefer – weightlifting, running or yoga – and make it a point to practice every day, even if only for 15 minutes, to keep the blues away.
As human beings, we tend to dwell on the past instead of looking forward to the future. Try to contemplate something simple you would like to achieve this year; it may be a vacation with friends, a promotion at work or joyful family gatherings. This way, you will have something to work on and to look forward to.
Even if the kitchen is not really your favourite spot, try cooking a meal that you love and take your time indulging in it. Maybe it is a pasta dish or a delicious chicken casserole. You will be surprised at how relaxing cooking is because it allows you to kick negative thoughts out while you focus on preparing that exquisite meal.
Talking to a friend or a family member who always manages to make you laugh is a great idea to switch your mood. Just give that person a call and chat for a while focusing on the positives. We guarantee that good stories will turn that frown into a smile immediately.
