Marathons are usually organised in the fall and spring seasons – for a reason. Running during summer can be very tricky as the human body cannot perform to its best ability during times of scorching heat and high humidity levels. Hot weather raises the body’s temperature and humidity prevents sweat from evaporating, both of which make it physically harder to run.
To avoid injuries and successfully keep up your pace during summer, here are a few tips to follow on your next summer jog.
Early morning hours are the best time of the day to go out for a run. The temperature is still relatively low and the sun is the weakest. Take advantage of that light morning breeze to run.
If you are not a morning person, the alternative would be going out at dawn as the temperature lowers.
Pick a trail with no asphalt radiating the sun rays back to you or retaining the heat and with plenty of trees around that provide enough shade from sunrays. Parks or river side are a great option for jogging, but if you must run throughout the city, pick the right time (morning or late evening) and plan a route between tall buildings that offer some shade.
To avoid getting dehydrated while jogging, keep a bottle of water with you and take a sip every few minutes. If you choose to run in the morning, always start your day with a big glass of water to get your body ready for the day. Make it a point to drink plenty of water before, during and after your jogs.
To keep your perspiration system in good shape, drink at least 8 to 12 ounces of water 30 minutes before running or any kind of exercise.
Choosing the right workout attire is key to ensuring a smooth and comfortable jog. Pick a light outfit that allows the breeze to pass right through and does not absorb sweat. Additionally, make sure to wear light colours that reflect the sunbeams rather than dark colours that absorb the heat and make you feel hotter.
