3 yoga poses that boost your immune system

Yoga can help you release feelings of stress, feel stronger as well as help prevent getting a seasonal flu. As we get closer to winter, here are 3 practices to try.

Winter is coming and so are sore throats, joint pain and runny noses. No matter how warm you try to keep or how many vitamin C tablets you take, you it is hard to avoid the flu during this season. To maximise your chances of dodging viruses, having a strong immune system is essential. Practising yoga offers you a long list of benefits and it includes strengthening your immunity.

Yoga reduces stress and anxiety, boosts respiratory health and ensures the optimal working of all organs of the body. If you are looking for ways to strengthen your immune system while getting your blood flowing, here are some yoga postures and practices you should try.

The rabbit posture

Also known as sasangasana, this pose is a game-changer when it comes to reducing stress levels. It helps blood flow up to the crown of your head which enables you to relax. The rabbit pose also strengthens the spine and stretches out the back and shoulders while stimulating the immune and endocrine systems.

How to perform the rabbit pose:

  • On a folded blanket, begin in a high kneeling position with your knees hip-width apart.
  • Inhale as you reach back to cup your heels or clasp your ankles.
  • Exhale as you tuck your chin into your collarbones, slowly bending forward and place the crown of your head on the floor in front of your knees.
  • Raise your buttocks slowly and as high as possible until your thighs are almost vertical.
  • Breathe in and widen your shoulder blades for 3 to 5 breaths, then slowly come out of the pose.

The camel pose

This pose is great for increasing blood circulation and stimulating the thyroid gland. It also helps calm the nervous system and strengthens the spine, all of which contribute to improving your immune system.

How to perform the camel pose:

  • Stand on your knees on the yoga mat. Make sure they are hip-width apart.
  • Place your fingertips at the base of your spine.
  • Look up while slowly leaning backwards and reaching for your heels.
  • Pull up onto your heels and shift your weight forwards.
  • Inhale and exhale several times before exiting the pose.

Alternate nostril breathing

Also known as Nadishodhana Pranayama, it is a powerful breathing practice that helps reinforce the respiratory system while reducing anxiety. This pose also helps purify and balance energy channels, while ensuring a smooth flow of energy through the body.

How to perform alternate nostril breathing:

  • Place your thumb on your right nostril.
  • Close your eyes and exhale from your left nostril.
  • Once you’ve exhaled, release your right nostril then put your ring finger on your left nostril.
  • Once you’ve inhaled completely, exhale through your right nostril.
  • Release your ring finger and close your right nostril with your thumb again. Breathe in and exhale fully from your left nostril.
  • Repeat the full process two times.
